Vitamin IV Therapy: What You Need to Know

 In Lifestyle, Reviews

What is it? Vitamin IV Therapy is an intravenous rehydration and vitamin delivery therapy. It replaces fluid, amino acids, electrolytes, vitamins and minerals that you lose when exercising, training, stressing, sweating, and living in general.

It can relieve symptoms associated with illnesses like heat stroke, colds & flus, vitamin deficiencies, and even excess alcohol consumption – yes, some of you will know vitamin IV therapy as a “hangover treatment.” IV therapy clinics are very popular in Las Vegas!

Aside from relieving your symptoms of being hungover AF, vitamin IV therapy can be used to prevent dehydration and illness, and assist in recovery. It’s ideal for athletes, anyone in high-stress environments, and people who push their bodies to extremes – don’t sleep well, don’t eat well, generally don’t take care of their health.

It’s also ideal for anyone currently taking vitamins orally. Since you can’t actually absorb all the vitamins you eat, vitamin IV therapy is the perfect way to ensure you’re getting the vitamins your body needs to perform well.

Especially at time of year, not only are colds and flus going around, but with the shorter and colder days, we’re getting less vitamin d from the sun and are generally more exposed to germs.

Regardless of what you’re using it for, vitamin IV therapy will improve your life.

What to expect your first appointment: to start off the session, I was settled into a comfortable recliner in a private room with a TV while I filled out the four-page health history questionnaire. After finishing the written questionnaire, the naturopath went over the form with me to confirm all the info and ensure I had no relevant allergies. With all my info, the doc created a custom bag of vitamins and minerals to fit my needs (I did a mix of recovery and energy).

I have to be honest, I don’t like needles and was a little worried about it since my epically horrible experience with the IV I got for my wisdom teeth removal. But Moira was great! I honestly didn’t feel too much when she connected the IV bag to my arm. Before I knew it, I was relaxed back with my feet up watching Price is Right and answering emails.

I didn’t feel anything during the appointment, but apparently, sometimes people get warm sensations from their arteries dilating or faintness from the magnesium. I didn’t really feel anything during or immediately after but I noticed I slept well that night and the following few nights. I didn’t necessarily wake up any less tired, but I did notice a difference in how much coffee I drank – a lot less! Which is good considering the amount of coffee I drink is definitely unhealthy. I didn’t notice too much of a difference in my lifting or training generally, except that I wasn’t as sore.

Overall, it was a great experience. I haven’t gotten sick yet this Fall (and I’ve gotten sick every Fall since grade 8!). I recommend this therapy for anyone who doesn’t have a good diet and/or may be dehydrated. Corporate people who work under high stress or those who put a lot of strain on their bodies and/or minds can also benefit from vitamin IV therapy.

Everyone I’ve spoken to who has tried this therapy has enjoyed it…Nichole tried vitamin IV therapy at the Adelaide Clinic, “hoping to not get sick by nasty-ass sick people at work (lol),” she says, “at the beginning of every season I usually get sick and it lasts a while [and since the vitamin IV therapy] I haven’t gotten sick!”

Sarah says she “would recommend it to anyone who is looking for that extra boost of vitamins. If you want to avoid being a victim of the flu this winter… get it. If you’re an athlete looking for quick recovery… look no further. Also, if your benefits cover it then you really have no excuse.” Yes, that is correct, HEALTHCARE will cover your vitamin IV therapy up to 80% (as a naturopathic service), so there’s really no reason not to try it.
